The Alexander Knox House

The Bounty was designed and built in 1935 by Alexander Knox and his brother-in-law, Christopher Lafarge; both lived and worked in New York City as architects and Lafarge also as a designer. The Bounty has a rich history and is one of the most exclusive pieces of property in Rhode Island.
The Bounty was part of a family compound which included four houses in a row on Narragansett Bay, all designed to look entirely different and to show off the architectural design abilities of the owners. The house on the hill coming down to the properties was the grounds-keepers house. He was English and has passed down many stories about the yard and the garden parties of Mrs. Millie Knox.
The entire community at the Knoxs time was filled with authors, artists, and crafts people. Mrs. Knox kept a very Italianate garden and grounds and loved to play croquet with her friends on the sweeping lawns that run down to the sea. This was a summer house at the time it was built, Owen Wister, a nearby neighbor, who was the author of The Virginian, was a frequent attendee of the parties.
Designed in the style of Frank Lloyd Wright, The Bounty has as one of its many features an amazing 21 x 37 great room, with a wall of windows, overlooking Narragansett Bay. The views from every aspect of the room are inspiring! The great room also features a big fireplace with a raised hearth. One end of the great room opens with French doors to a pergola-covered patio with Italianate columns. This area, too faces the sea.
Other rooms in the house are a spacious kitchen, a library, formal dining room, office, family room and two first floor bedrooms. There are one and a half baths on the first level.
The second level of The Bounty is devoted entirely to the master suite. The attached sitting area has a cozy fireplace. There are two walk-in closets and a luxurious bathroom with a separate dressing area.
A recent addition has been the heated, in-ground pool and patio. A detached, two-car garage with a huge storage area or work area is just adjacent to the house.
The Bounty is a nine and one half acre estate with over 300 feet of ocean waterfront. It is a wonderful, protected shoreline and offers fantastic views, a pristine beach, and beautiful rock outcroppings. The property currently has the right to two moorings. There is also a permit to put up an 80 foot dock, if desired. The harbormaster in Wickford has commented to the owners that it is the best piece of waterfront property that he sees as he passes by. Of course, we value his opinion!
The Bountys water views consist of the lovely Newport Bridge, locally called The Crown and also the island of Jamestown. The Bounty faces Watson Farm, which is preserved by the state of Rhode Island. Down the road is Casey Farm, another state protected property and in the other direction is the new Chafee State park which will also not be developed.
The area surrounding the Bounty is rare and beautiful, even spectacular! The property itself is a once in a lifetime opportunity. Although it is very private, there is very easy highway access and is about one hour from Boston and 20 minutes to downtown Newport.
