A US built J/105 for sale on Lake Erie. \"Knot Guilty\" is equipped for one design, PHRF, distance racing, shorthanded racing, or casual sailing. She has the desirable light weight pre-SCRIMP hull. \"Knot Guilty\" has 242 pounds of corrector weights. The corrector weights are down low in the hull, which is an advantage against the post-SCRIMP hulls. Pre-SCRIMP boats have a reputation for sailing better upwind in heavy air and waves. She is hull number 10.
\"Knot Guilty\" was the 2016 Chagrin Lagoons Yacht Club Champion. PHRF-Lake Erie has assigned her a J/105 class handicap of 90 seconds per mile. The length overall is 34’6”. She has the standard 6’6” draft fin keel. The keel is made of lead. \"Knot Guilty\" has a steering wheel. The hull was professionally painted with Awlgrip white in 2012. The hull and deck have spots with moisture and delamination.
When J/Boats introduced the J/105 in 1991, it became a short-handed racing success. 680 J/105s have been built. An advantage of owning a J/105 is an active and well-organized class association. The J/105 Class Association website list 19 fleets with members registered in 2019. There are fleets in Lake Erie, Lake Ontario, Detroit, New England, New York City, Long Island Sound, the Chesapeake, California, the Northwest, Galveston, and other locations.
The J/105 is a racer/cruiser, with the emphasis on racer. She has berths for four people. She is not a long-distance cruiser or a live-aboard boat, however sailors have raced J/105s across the Atlantic. The boat has a crew-friendly large cockpit and a bow-sprit. The J/105 hallmarks are stability and a design that is less demanding that many other racers of its size and speed potential. It is less effort and more fun.
