Freeman Plat historic district is a 53 acre late 19th/early 20th century planned development at the center of Providences East Side with an emphasis on landscape design and specimen plantings. Frederick Law Olmsted, of New Yorks famed Central and Prospect Parks, and considered largely to be the father of American landscape architecture, was commissioned by John T. Freeman to create a quiet, residential setting unlike any other in the area.
Freeman Parkway curves and encompasses blocks of varying lengths and widths. Herringbone pattern brick sidewalks are set far back from the street by generous grass and cherry tree studded borders that burst into bloom each spring.
The vast majority of homes date from the early 1920s through mid-1930s and show the full range of popular revival styles, the Dutch colonial being the rarest. Adding to the distinction of the area are lots that average 8,000 square feet (60 to 100% larger than that of the typical 4-5,000 sq. ft. East Side dwelling).
