The Area
Just a five minute walk takes you into the towns central streets, with shops, supermarkets, bars and restaurants. Castro Verde is located within the centre of the lower Alentejo region and hosts festivals and markets throughout the year.

The town has a health centre with A&E (accident and emergency) plusa 24hr pharmacy. A large open air market is held on the 1st Wednesday of every month. The town has boutiques, hardware and household shops. There is a post office, several banks with cash points, childrens play park,public library,night club, public swimming pools and tennis courts, along witha spa offering various therapies and treatments. The town has acoach station, several petrol stations, a cinema/theatre, several churches, a cultural centre, tourist officeand a museum.With all these amenities Castro Verde still maintains all the Portuguese culture, architecture and traditions of a beautiful historical town.

Agriculture and mining have been the mainstayof this region. The plains became a vast areaforgrain production and cattle/sheep grazing.Mining dates back hundredsof years with an abundant source of mineralsincluding gold, silver, copper, tin, lead and iron.The richness and abundance of these combined base economies grew to such an extent that Castro Verde became a regional centre of commerce and thus a crossroad of cultures within the Mediterranean area.

There are several excellent vineyards within a 20 minute drive.
