\"Manticore\" is hull number 13 of 19 Custom Hood 40's made by Gulfstar between 1977 and 1978. She is a true blue water cruiser, complete with a cockpit table which was a gift to the current owner from Ted Hood himself. Ted often remarked that this was one of his favorite yachts he designed.
This exceptional yacht began her life in Santa Cruz, CA as “Windrunner” (1977-2000), then shipped across the country by her current owner to Marblehead, MA and named “Dovetail” (2000-2004), then owned by the Hood family in Marblehead, MA as “Westerly” (2004-2014), and was bought back by the current owner and renamed “Manticore” (2014-present).
She has been actively cruised from the Chesapeake to Maine and consistently cared for with upgrades by some of the finest yacht yards between the Chesapeake and New England. In 2015 she was re-powered with a new Yanmar 4JH and has since also had brand new winches, canvas - including covers for her bright-work, two unique sets of electronics for offshore reliability, a rebuilt rudder, rebuilt centerboard casing and new centerboard cable, rebeded chain plates, new head and holding tank, new seacocks, and all new ports and hatches.
Included aboard this yacht is her feature in Nautical Quarterly, as well as the original advertisement by Ted Hood and the Gulfstar yard. She has a custom-made Fairclough cover and frame, which is designed to accommodate the mast in or out for the winter. The vessel comes with an awning and her new dodger has been designed by Yacht Canvas in Annapolis to attached to a future bimini
This is the perfect yacht for anyone who wants a true classic design with the high function of a 3’11” shoal draft to explore any cove between the Chesapeake and the Bahamas. Her center board gives her unmatched stability in any seas. And, her forward facing nav station and full radar visibility from the helm station is ideally situated for the thickest fog.
This yacht will take you anywhere you want to go and will catch the eye of every classic yacht enthusiast along the way.
