Hampton 43′ Pilot House Cutter Rigged Sloop

Scrimshaw was custom ordered and built in Hampton′s boatyard in Shanghai, China in 1996. She was imported on Galveston Bay, Texas in 1997. We bought her in Galveston Bay in 1999 in new condition (instruments, stereo, medicine cabinets, etc. still in the boxes uninstalled) we actually cut one of the sail bags open in order to sea trial her. In July of 1999 we had her trucked to San Diego, were we had her commissioned. We did some day sailing and spent a few nights anchored at the nearby Coronado Islands in order to get used to sailing a blue water cruiser. We were anchored at these islands when the big California New Year′s Eve storm of 1999 blew through. A forty plus a footmotor yacht sank that evening and a couple of sailboats had to pull up their anchors and get underway because their sails came unfurled. Scrimshaw held steady with her 55 pound Delta anchor and about 200 feet of all chain rode. We enjoyed the New Year′s Eve fireworks from San Diego and Ensenada during our all night watch. What an exciting first overnight sail.

On February 4, 2000 Darlene, myself and our friend John headed south bound for La Paz, Mexico in the company of Quetzal, a 41 foot Hunter Sloop with our friends Dave and Glenda on board. We had a fast downwind run, at times surfing down waves at 10 knots, that′s when we really appreciated the stability of a having a full keeled boat. Our first stop along the way was at Turtle Bay and then Magdalena Bay to rest and whale watch. We arrived in Cabo after ten days on Valentine′s Day where we were invited to our first cocktail party at anchor by a Planetary Geologist who owned a Spindrift, Hampton's predecessor. Spindrift sold their molds to Hampton, so in essence our boat is a newer, undated, wider version of the Spindrift. Instant new friends due to all our common interest. At the next anchorage we hosted the party and included our friend on Quetzel.

We rounded the corner of the Baja Peninsula and when we arrived in La Paz we were welcomed by our new friends from Spain, whom we had met in San Diego, they introduced us to their friend from Australia. So goes the wonderful world of cruising.

We fell in love with La Paz and made it our base for several years, spending a lot of time in the Sea of Cortez enjoying the islands and anchorages such as Isla San Francisco, Bahia de Los Gatos, Agua Verde and many others, going as far North as the Bay of LA.

For the first five years or so we would head north to Ensenada or San Diego to keep Scrimshaw safe during Hurricane Season. That trip involves a lot of motoring as the prevailing winds are from the Northwest and we really came to appreciate Scrimshaw's very large fuel tanks, holding almost 300 gallons of diesel. Scrimshaw has a range under of power of about 1,000 N.M. We made the trip north to Ensenada or San Diego (the Baja Bash) four times and the voyage south to Cabo and then North to the Sea of Cortez five times. One year we had planned to head to Hawaii from Puerto Vallarta, unfortunately we were delayed in our departure from Ensenada that year due to the passing of a family member. When it was time to head to Hawaii we were just returning to Ensenada. The forecasted winds appeared to be in our favor for a passage starting from Ensenada to Hawaii, so we thought why not give it a try. The first week was lovely, the second week we had difficulties and changes in the winds. Since a \"Gentleman never sails to weather\" Darlene and I discussed our options. While Hawaii is lovely, neither of us liked the music or food and the anchorages were not as accommodating as in Mexico, so we opted to head back towards the coast and down the Baja Peninsular once again. Three weeks out on the ocean showed us that we and Scrimshaw could handle an ocean crossing but that our hearts were now firmily attached to Mexico.

One year when we were heading back to La Paz from Puerto Vallarta by way of Mazatlan, we learned that Mazatlan has not had direct hit by a Hurricane in 70 years so, and further, that Marina Mazatlan is a pretty good hurricane hole with its long narrow entry channel. So, we sopped making the bash back North each year. We then discovered that we liked Mazatlan even better than La Paz, bought a Condo overlooking the Mazatlan Marina , then a house nearby and now live in Mazatlan full time.

All of a sudden we have been blessed with five grandchildren over the last three years and Roy's health has deteriorated with Parkinson so it is time for us to retire from sailing Scrimshaw and enjoy our next adventure.
