COMPLETE AWLGRIP REPAINT 2016
The Mercer 44 has the greatest longevity of any of Bill Tripp's designs. No longer in regular production, the Mercer 44 took her name from where she was built in Trenton, New Jersey -- Mercer County -- by Mercer Reinforced Plastics. This design is largely a flush-decked version of the Bermuda 40, gaining the additional four feet of overall length through a slightly higher freeboard. She has a well-proportioned doghouse on her otherwise flush deck. The Mercer 44 is said to be Bill Tripp's favorite. All owners of Mercer 44s have high praise for the design.
The additional 4 feet versus the Bermuda 40, plus the flush deck, gives the main cabin enhanced spaciousness and opens up the otherwise traditional layout. It has a proper sized head with hot water shower and huge hanging lockers opposite. Mercer 44s do not appear on the used boat market very often because their owners love them.
The tooling for this boat was acquired by Cape Cod Shipbuilding after 1962 when Mercer Reinforced Plastics had built the first six boats. Since then, Cape Cod has built eight more, including SYNIA, in 1978, for Charles Struthers who circimnavigated South America and cruised aboard her to Antarctica.
The present, (second) owner of SYNIA completed a three year re-fit to include top-side Awlgrip, mast & spars, spray-on RinoLiner non-skid, bright work inside & out, complete re-wiring, micro-wave/convection oven, television & stereo, new navigation station, upholstery, interior paint, rebuilt stove (w/electric cook top), plumbing, new sail covers/cushions, electric windless, 10' hard dinghy w/chocks, 3.5 Kw NextGen with complete electrical installation, ICOM M304 VHF w/Mast mounted antenna, ICOM M700 SSB w/large DynaPlate & ICOM auto-antenna tuner, Spin Tec Roller Furling System, Roller Furling Jib, 3 New hatches (fiberglass over teak), dedicated bilge pump for bottom of chain locker (2010), holding tank with deck pump-out & overboard discharge (2010), and more.
Broker has extensive picture file with photo documentation of most work completed.
