Montalcino lies to the north- west of Monte Amiata, towards the end of the Val d’Orcia (Orcia Valley) and on the boundary with the province of Grosseto. It is a fantastic example of a typical, medieval small town.

Its dominant position offers splendid views which look over the entire Val d’Orcia . Indeed , there is a fortress, built in medieval times , which the population used to impede the advance of enemies and defend itself . It has now been restored and is open to the public. Today, Montalcino is the most prestigious and characteristic example of a historic town in the Val d’Orcia.
