The Ocean 55 Super Sport combined two essential elements of
any modern tournament fisherman—speed and beauty. Her
long foredeck, unbroken sheerline, and sleek cabin profile are classic
Jersey styling characteristics, and her 30-knot performance
was a remarkable feat in the early 1980s for a production boat
this size. Belowdecks, the 55’s three-stateroom interior with three
heads and deckhouse galley (Plan A) proved more popular with
owners than the three-stateroom, mid-galley version (Plan B) with
two heads and a more spacious salon. Note that the 55 was restyled
in 1986 with a new flybridge, a solid front windshield, and
a black mask running around the deckhouse. The foredeck seat
was also eliminated in 1986 for a more streamlined appearance.
Whereas most big sportfishermen in this size range require the
heavier 12-cylinder diesels to reach (or even approach) the magic
30-knot number, the Ocean 55 SS got the job done with lighter,
more efficient (and far less expensive) 8V92s. Top speed with the
735hp versions of the 8V92s is 31 knots, and she’ll cruise at a fast
27 knots. A total of 170 of these yachts were built making her the
most popular Ocean models ever produced.
