THE TOWN OF SACILE

The historic and picturesque town of Sacile is located in the Province of Pordenone and is 15km from the capital city of the province, also named Pordenone.

Sacile is known as the 'Garden of the Serenissima', reflecting its similarity to Venice and the many palaces that were constructed alongside the Livenza River for the nobility of the Venetian region. It is, of course, the Livenza that borders the park of this property.

The historic centre of Sacile is located on two islands of the Livenza River and it is not known if these are natural or were man made. The town developed in the seventh century as a strong-point on the route from Veneto to Friuli. A cathedral and a castle were built on the larger island, while the smaller one contained the port and commercial area.

Sacile, with its numerous sixteenth century palaces, including the splendid Loggia Comunale and, above all, the Palazzo Ragazzoni Flangini Billia, is considered to be the perfect Renaissance town.

Many of the buildings have ornamental Renaissance or Baroque-style motifs, making Sacile, with its network of little bridges and alleyways leading to beautiful hidden corners, a delightful place just to stroll around in.

In August each year, there is the traditional Sagra dei Osei, one of oldest village festivals in Italy, with a big market-exhibition of birds and a birdsong competition.

PORDENONE AND THE SURROUNDING AREA

The city of Pordenone is the capital of the province of the same name. Pordenone has many places of historical interest including the Palazzo Comunale, Palazzo Ricchieri, the Castle Tower, the Cathedral of St. Mark (XIII Century), the Church of Santa Maria degli Angeli (1300), Piazza San Marco, Piazza della Motta, Piazza del Risorgimento and Piazza XX Settembre.

There are also ancient palaces and stately homes in and around the city centre, whilst the colonnaded buildings with their Gothic and Renaissance frescoes and splendid examples of Venetian porches along many major roads add much to the elegance of the city.
