The present day town of Scansano dates back to the medieval times, but it was first inhabited by Etruscans and Romans. It is located in the beautiful countryside of Maremma, with panoramic views. It has an archaeological museum with findings from the original Etruscan and Roman settlements and a Wine Museum celebrating its famous wine, Morellino di Scansano which is said to have its roots in the Etruscan era. But Scansano is not just famous for its wine but also for its olive oil; which is of a very high quality.

Every weekend in September there is the Morellino wine and food tasting festival, which takes place in the various medieval wine cellars in Scansano and the agritourisms scattered around the area.
