Santa Catalina is one of the most attractive neighborhoods in the city. With the atmosphere of a village, it combines old and modern lifestyles at the same time. Owing its name to an old hospital dedicated to Saint Catherine of Alexandria, patron saint of merchants and sailors, and close to the sea, it was a typical fishermens neighborhood. In addition, there were also manufacturers of moorings and flour millers, and we can still find eighteenth-century mills in Industria Street and in Es Jonquet.
The photogenic old and traditional houses of Santa Catalina boast brightly painted facades, old wooden shutters and small front balconies, many of them decorated with plants and flowers.
The heart of this neighbourhood is its covered market, which is responsible for supplying residents and a large number of restaurants, cafes and bars that make Santa Catalina a popular culinary meeting place.
A few meters from there are four mills dating from 1680. The mills are of tower type with base (housing). In 1981 they were declared an Artistic Historic Site and in 1983 the restoration of the four mills began.
Santa Catalina is known as the Soho of Palma de Mallorca. It has earned this nickname because it is a neighbourhood with certain bohemian tints, good restaurants, some alternative businesses and an excellent market. The area of Santa Catalina enjoys a tremendous vitality, which is why, in recent years, it enjoys great demand.
