Early Victorian residence on c. 20 acres in a most private and sheltered location with extensive direct access to Castlehaven Harbour.
The house which is in a ruined state has a superb location in the centre of the land enjoying magnificent views of the harbour.
In the 1901 census the house was occupied by Fr James Kearney and was categorised as a ‘First Class` with 20 rooms and 16 windows in the front of the house. It was also occupied by a house-keeper, parlour maid and coachman.
Built around 1850 by James Hutchinson Swanton who was a justice of the peace, a man of considerable substance in the area and a major partner in the adjacent mill (now disused).
In later times it became known as ‘The Priests House` as it was occupied by members of the clergy serving in Castlehaven parish.
It is interesting to note that in a lease created in May 1859, the term was for lives and 61 years. The lives mentioned in the lease were the three sons of Queen Victoria.
The land consists of approx. 8 arable acres, the remainder is laid out in woodland with an array of magnificent mature trees including oak, maple, weeping ash and beech.
Planning permission had been granted to restore and extend the existing house.
