Directions
Turn off the London Road (A419) at the traffic lights by The British Oak pub about half a mile out of Stroud, into Butterrow Hill signposted to Animal Hospital and drive past the Citroen garage on the left. Follow the road around a sharp bend to the right, then to the left and park in the lay-by on the left (or further up the hill on the road). There is a white gate in an arch on the opposite side of the road which takes you into the garden and up steps to the front of Robinia House. Alternatively, walk up the footpath on the left of the house and through the gate on the right.
The Location
Butterrow Hill is in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, overlooking the Stroud valleys and hills and set beneath Rodborough Common - owned by the National Trust and open to all. The area is great for walking and cycle rides, and the river and canal at the bottom of the hill have paths to Stroud and beyond.
Stroud has an award-winning farmers' market and a good range of shops, supermarkets, restaurants and cafes. Many of the local villages have pubs serving good quality food and many have live music of all kinds.
There are many good and excellent primary and secondary schools in the area, both state and private: Archway School (secondary comprehensive), Wycliffe College, Beaudesert Park, Stroud High School (grammar school for girls), Marling School (grammar school for boys).
Stroud is very conveniently placed for transport links: there is a regular train service to Swindon, Reading and Paddington (90 mins and hourly in peak times); and many drive to Bristol or Swindon for work - the M5 is 6 miles away and the M4 30 miles.
