Awards

The Master Builders Association Excellence in Building Award 2004 - Winner 'Special Purpose Dwellings Retirement Facility' section

Knitting for friends across the sea

Friends across the Sea is a dedicated group of residents at Maranatha Lodge, Catholic Healthcare's Batehaven residential aged community. These residents meet weekly to knit squares, blankets, beanies, bookmarks, jumpers and teddy bears. Using donated wool, these perfectly crafted items are then packed and sent to disadvantaged people in Tanzania. This activity brings these residents great joy and satisfaction as it enables them to support other people in need.

"There is no greater feeling than to give to others." - Friends across the Sea participant

Maranatha Angels on Hot Wheels
Each week, clad in bright orange safety vests and comfortably seated on their 'hot wheels' (motorised scooters), eight Maranatha Lodge residents, accompanied by their recreational officer, take to the streets of Batehaven. Aptly named the Maranatha Angels, their motto is 'Live for today, not tomorrow'. This group of residents buzz with excitement after their weekly scooter outings to the beach or the local cafe. An initiative designed to enable less mobile residents to get out and about, the Maranatha Angels program has been a huge success and truly demonstrates that you are never too old to have fun.

"It gives me a great sense of adventure being able to get out and about."
"I'm a bit scared but I love it. I can't wait until the next time we get to go."
"My dog and I love getting out in the fresh air."
"I enjoy getting dressed for the part."
- Maranatha Angels participants
