Originally Etruscan, Todi is a beautiful medieval town located on a hilltop south of Perugia. Access from the main car park below is now easy thanks to a funivia that resembles a cable car on rail tracks. Piazza del Popolo is the main square and, of course, is flanked by the Duomo (Cathedral) and civic buildings, the Palazzo del Capitano, Palazzo del Popolo and Palazzo del Priori. The Duomo is worth a look inside and there is a small art gallery/museum in the Palazzo del Capitano.

San Fortunato is the largest church other than the Duomo and located close to the Piazza del Popolo. Inside you'll find a small fresco by Masolino di Panicale, of particular note because he was teacher of Masaccio, one of the first Renaissance painters. You can also climb the bell tower, worth it for the views of the stunning Umbrian countryside.
Santa Maria della Consolazione is one of Italy's finest Renaissance churches, built, as is typical of this style of church, in its own space outside the town walls.
