Location

Lefkogia is a busy village all year round, with shops, a bakery, kafenia and several Taverns. Situated just 5km from the popular small resort of Plakias with all its amenities, including a long sandy beach, many shops, bars and Taverns and 2km from the secluded beaches at Skinaria and Amundi, it's an excellent location. The village is also very close to the well known village of Plakias.

Plakias is just 25km south from the town of Rethymnon, and is central to both major airports. Accessed from either one of two spectacular gorges, Plakias sits at the base of sweeping mountains that roll down to the sea, the hillsides are dotted with olive groves and small villages set high up overlooking the bay and Plakias harbour. Plakias was and still is a small fishing town, and has a row of taverns on the sea front that serve fresh fish, from the local fishing boats. More recently Plakias has grown into a popular location for travellers who like to get away from the hustle and bustle of the main tourist resorts, but still enjoy a town that has all the amenities on offer including a spectacular long sandy beach. There are plenty of supermarkets, bars and taverns, a doctor's surgery, hairdresser, ATM, junior school and recently a library. Not to mention some wonderful shops tucked in amongst the back streets that sell a range of goods from crafts, jewellery to designer clothing. Around Plakias are some lovely sights to visit, including the famous Prevelli Monastery and the gorge that is home to some of the rare Griffen Vultures. There are also boat trips to a variety of locations along the south coast or across to the most southerly island of Gavdos. Both east and west of Plakias are some quieter coves and beaches looking to be explored, along with many traditional villages, whose pattern of life hasn't changes for many years. Here you will find the hospitable Cretan villagers who welcome you to share their lifestyle.

40 minutes away from Gianniou stands the renowned monastery of Preveli. Built during the 17th century to replace an older monastery, the place is renowned for its role in Cretan revolts against the various occupying forces and for the help provided to allied troops during the Second World War. It hosts a small museum whose exhibits include lavishly ornamented vestments, censers and icons dated back to the 13th century. After the visit of the monastery, the tour will walk about one hour down the fields to its final destination, the Preveli beach. This magic white sand beach is formed on one side by a lake of crystal clear sweet water from the Kourtaliotis River and on the other side by the beep blue waters of the Libyan Sea. Surrounding the River stands one of the two only natural palm groves of Europe.
