The department of Drome is part of the Rhone-Alpes region. It boasts a similar landscape to that of Provence as well as the higher parts being similar to the department of the Hautes Alpes. Drome is the southern most department of the Rhone Alpes region. It is not surprising to see large fields of lavender, sunflowers or vineyards often comparing itself to its neighbours.
The biggest feature of the Drome area is the many medieval villages and towns and the stunning Chateaux. Many towns have medieval centres too with walled castellations. The area is also known for its hearty food and olive oil production. This department offers a great quality of life for those living there, with varied gastronomy specialities and picturesque villages dotting the lush, green countryside. Set at the crossroads of Provence and the Alps, it is not a well known area and a lot of people just pass through it, yet it is close to large cities such as Lyon and Marseille, so this offering means it is moderate in price for property.
The climate varies a lot depending on the location in the department and the altitude of course. The best area to settle for year round living is perhaps the southern Drome where inhabitants enjoy a Mediterranean style climate. Two different winds blow on the area, the Mistral from the north, and a sea wind from the south. The first one dries the air a lot then the latter brings a more humid, mild air to the area. Rain can be frequent at times and snowfalls occur every year for three weeks on average, so it is beautiful to look at all year round.
