In 1999, we bought 32 hectares (about 80 acres) of land on Isla Cristobol near Bocas del Toro, Panama (very close to the Atlantic Costa Rica border). We planted 22 hectares with 22000 high quality teak trees purchased from the Panamanian deptartment of Agriculture. Teak is a hardwood with international demand. Under a reforestation project, Panamanian government allows selling lumber tax free for 25 years in return for development/reforestation of the plantation. Teak is insect and disease resistant so there are very few lost trees during growth. To have quality wood, the property has to be maintained with the trees pruned and thinned. The property has been professionally maintained by a manager who has been with us from the start and he would be happy to stay on if we sell the property. We have a financial firm that handles payroll, social security and all other financial matters. The property has a high ridge running thru the center which can provide a number of desirable building lots. We have plenty of water and electric would be by generator. We have deep water anchorage from our dock which is in a cove on the mainland side.
