Robert Perry designed the Fair Weather Mariner as an \"updated Westsail,\" with the seaworthiness Westsails were known for and the improved performance of modern design. Perry gave the boat a relatively narrow beam and fairly full ends. This overall shape combined with powerful aft sections, gave the boat a long sailing length for its size.
The Fair Weather Mariner, like many Perry designs, has a long and shallow fin keel with spade rudder hung on a skeg. The rig is a combination sloop and cutter, with the staysail having it own headstay built in.
The interior was designed to be especially functional for life at sea. The galley is U-shaped with plenty of places for the cook to brace himself. The sinks are nearly on the midline. To port of the companionway is a navigation area with a chart table, quarter berth and space set aside for electronics. The main cabin features an L-shaped dinette and an opposite settee. Forward of the mast is a large combined head and shower unit.
The numerous windows and ports make the teak lined interior light and airy. Above decks less teak was used to reduce maintenance. Construction is of solid hand laminated fiberglass.
