The fortress was one of the first papal fortresses in this area and was constructed in 900ad. It became famous for its part in the feud between the Monaldeschi family and the Filippeschi family and became known as the Fortezza della Pace, because of the peace pact signed by them there.

Benano is set on a rock overlooking a valley with vineyards and olive groves and faces Orvieto, with its magnificent cathedral. Above the hamlet is the plain of Alfina. 1.3 km to Viceno. 11.6 km (20 minute drive) to Orvieto. 87km to Perugia, 131km to Rome, 176km to Florence.
