Location

Agios Aimilianos is a cape in the southern part of Argolida flirting with the island of Spetses. Around the cape you will find small, sandy beaches ideal for relaxing and swimming in the crystal blue waters of the Saronic Gulf. Only 7 km away from Agios Aimilianos you can visit Porto Heli, a beautiful, natural harbour where you can find a variety of things to do, such as yachting, scuba diving, water skiing, and windsurfing. Or you can just relax and enjoy the Greek traditional food in one of the many good restaurants there.

From Agios Aimilianos you are offered a range of possibilities for exploring the region. Different excursions to other beautiful destinations are possible from here. How about an excursion to Epidaurus, Nafplion, and Mycenae by car? Or to Hydra, Spetses, Poros, and Monemvassia by boat?

Get to Porto Heli
Porto Heli is located 180 kilometres south-western from Athens. Scenery coastal village built amphitheatrically in one of the best naturally sea shelters of Peloponnese, Porto Heli turned in a cosmopolitan destination because of the geographic place and the mild climate.

By Car
The distance from the International airport of Athens (El. Venizelos) is covered by car in approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes and by bus in 3 hours with a stop on the Korinth Canal.

The road from Athens follows the direction towards Corinth, a few meters afterwards the Isthmus of Corinth we follow to the right exit Nr.10 direction Epidavros and under the bridge left with direction to Epidaurus, Kranidi, Porto Heli, Spetses.

In the limits of Ancient Epidaurus (village) exists a right exit with signs for Kranidi and Porto Heli. You follow the exit to the right and afterwards left under the bridge. Continue straight ahead, you go up the mountain and afterwards we have the villages Koliaki and Trahia, with traditional taverns, chese-dairies, bakeries and butchers shops that serve their traditional products. Direction to Kranidi, Port Heli, Spetses passing the village Fourni. Before Kranidi, at the right a regional road exists. Porto Heli is at 8km distance from that point.

The road from Corinth up to Porto Heli (100 kilometers) is rich in changes of the natural environment and lasts approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes. Except if you stop to admire the unique view of old Epidaurus or select to visit the ancient theatre of Epidaurus.

By Train
The suburban - proastiakos - will take you to Corinth in a reasonable price. From there, a taxi will take you to Porto Heli with a charge of approximately 110 Euros for 2011.

By Boat
From the harbour of Piraeus there are daily at least 3 itineraries that cover the way to Porto Heli with intermediate stations to the islands of Saronic Bay in 2.10 to 2.30 hours approximately depending on the stops on the island Spetses and Hydra.

An alternative route that you can follow on your way back could be a visit to Nafplio (the old city of Nafplio is magic), potentially Mycenaes and for those who like wine, Nemea is only 4km bypass from the highway. The close distance from the capital, the easy and economic access, has brought Porto Heli at the top preferences for Greek and foreign visitors.

A short history of Porto Heli
The ruins of the ancient city of Halieis are on the south side of the bay, opposite the modern day village of Porto Heli. Some of the ruins (both on land and in the sea) are still visible.

The city of Halieis was enclosed by a wall with at least 5 gates and was large enough to have independent territorial rights and mint their own coins. The streets were laid out in a well organized grid, each house with their own courtyard and well and there were communal baths (visible in the shallows on a calm day). The inhabitants were fishermen and farmers in the main and the reasons for the decline/abandonment of the city are still not known today. Findings include decorated pottery, coins, and remains of roof tiles, terracotta figurines and metal objects.

Most of the excavation work was done during the 1960's and 1970's for the American School of Classical Studies in Athens by the Department of Classical Studies and the University Museum of the University of Pennsylvania and by the Department of Classics of Indiana University.

As interest in the area grew and the diggings tailed off, more independent travellers began to discover Porto Heli. Hotels were built in the area, more bars, taverns and shops and the boom was on. During the 1980's Porto Heli became a very popular package holiday destination which, in turn, led to people falling in love with the place (as I did) and buying summer homes in the area but it still retains much of its small fishing village charm. This is why Porto Heli is ideal for both quiet breaks, simply relaxing and enjoying the area or activity holidays packed with biking, exploring and water sports by day and sampling the local brew by night.

There are various theories about the modern name of 'Porto Heli', one being that Porto Heli translates (roughly) to 'The Bay of Eels' which was the mainstay of the fishing industry here some years ago. The fishermen here continue to go about their business and farming is the other main industry in the area. Argolis is well known for the quality of the wine grapes and the exceptionally low acidity of the olives (therefore olive oil) produced in the region. Don't forget to partake of both during your stay here.
